Celebrating one year of independent news!

Today marks the one year anniversary of the launch of ARSON News. We've certainly changed a lot in these 366 days, undergoing not one, but two redesigns (one of which was a full relaunch of the site) and reorganizing into ARSON Media, which will allow us to go into new ventures not directly related to news. We've also been lucky enough to attend various events and conferences in the pursuit of truly interesting news. Most recently we've begun featuring independent artists as a way of giving back to the non-mainstream and to provide more interesting music to you.

So what's next for ARSON? Within the next month, we plan to launch ARSON Radio, an online radio station streaming weekdays, and playing good music, whatever that may be. Sometime later this year we plan to launch a series of podcasts, and, eventually, vodcasts ranging in topic from news, to video games, to the internet, and whatever else one could think of. We also plan to launch a video news brodcast in early 2009, so be sure to keep an eye out.

Avoiding the obvious puns which could be made by an organization with a flame for its logo, the future of ARSON news is looking bright.

ARSON News is back with new articles, a better forum (chatroom coming soon!), unified login across all services, and some REALLY awesome graphics. While you can't really see it, there's some great new stuff going on in the background, too. We really hope you enjoy it.

Hello, everyone!

I was thinking of starting a new site where I could talk about things not immediately technically related as I do on my blog. Then I realized something. I created a site where I could do that quite a while ago. I worked on it for a while. Then I let it die. I'm talking, of course, about The Association for Reason and Societal Outreach Now, which I'm sure you know better as ARSON news.

So, to David, Cole (are either of you subscribed, even?), and anyone else who subscribes to this feed (I'm really surprised you stayed subscribed this long!) I will make you a promise. Before mid-August, I will get this site back up, with content and whatever else is necesary.

Here's a list of what I still have to do:

Write content.
Get the Advertising system working properly. We want to pay our authors.
The forums suck. I want the logins integrated between both sites.
- Make a registration page so people can register for forum accounts.
Upgrade Wordpress. I think we're still running 2.1. Wordpress is on 2.6, so we're a bit behind the times.
Fix the clearly broken comment system. This, unfortunately, might mean moving it to the normal Wordpress one.
Get some advertising of our own! We need readers!
Customize the author environment. This site is pretty much a copy of the site I did for The Blaze, which works way better. I'll merge the changes.
I want to add an events page
More categories
Come up with an official method of paying authors. I'm thinking some combo of page views and ratings.
Other misc. things
- I hate the default bullet points.
- The forum is still sort of sucky design wise.
- Sub-menus for categories with children would be awesome. No.
- We need a twitter.
- Upgrade the server to PHP5.

So, you can see what still needs to be done. Hopefully I can finish it in time, if not, well, at least ARSON news will go down with a fight.
